This month on A–Z we are diving into the watery world of artist and DJ Selica.

This mix is a cathartic fusion of cavernous reverbs, lush pad layers, undulating FM textures, and trance-inducing loops – all glued together by transient rhythms and percussive hits that all seems to come from the same universe despite the mix’s diverse range.

Dream-like transitions carry us through a montage of oscillator lullabies, many of which are reminiscent of early ambient experiments from artists like The Orb and Jan Jelinek; though this mix never loses its contemporary edge…we’re using laptops to make music now, after all. In any case we would love to hear this out loud in a cathedral, no matter the era.

Based in Brooklyn, NY, Selica is also part of the newly formed duo Admiration, whose debut single is out now, with more releases to come. Check them out here ↗

This month we are thrilled to welcome Thai-American, Brooklyn-based DJ, composer, and producer Apok to this series :)

Apok continually strives to weave together a tapestry sounds in his compositions - combining his penchant for cinematic storytelling, deep bass, hypnotic techno, percussive club rhythms and simmering sound design.

Fresh off his latest EP “Ore” released earlier this year on label Club Dub↗ which he co-runs, Apok plays a monthly radio residency at Newtown Radio and has graced the decks at clubs such as Mood Ring and Hell Phone.

For A—Z, Apok delivers a shape-shifting session of cinematic, dub-soaked techno. Across its runtime, the mix drifts through fogged-out club abstractions and hypnotic, slow-burn momentum; deconstructing and rebuilding rhythm in unexpected forms. It’s a reflection of Apok’s meticulous sound craft and narrative instinct as a producer, grounding experimental impulses in body-moving rhythms.

We are so excited to share a mix by CIAIC, a new friend and incredible DJ whose taste and breadth is inspirational.

CIAIC is an Italian DJ based in Paris. An insatiable delver of dance music’s murkiest depths, he draws inspiration from bass-heavy sounds, dub, footwork and beyond to open a gateway for his imagination.

He has crafted a heady 1.5 hours of hazey and frenetic lysergia dipped in oil drum sludge and riddled with tape echo. This mix is unique to CIAIC’s playful, imaginative lens yet remains reflective of the forward-thinking underground scenes of Sound-System-geared dance music that are currently making noise in places like Bristol and the south of France.

This month, we’re thrilled to feature a high-energy mix from MZ3.

A rising force and latest guest in our (eavesdrop) residency, MZ3 crafts a sound deeply rooted in the UK and sound system culture—but never confined by it. This mix is a kinetic blend of baile funk, reggaeton, and UK bass, weaving together dancefloor-driven intensity with unexpected emotional twists.

A frequent guest at staples like Bossa Nova Civic Club, Nowadays and Mansions, MZ3 has solidified their place in the Brooklyn circuit. Now, they’re set to take things further with a recently announced slot at Dripping, a New Jersey festival that, despite its youth, has already cultivated a reputation for its open-minded crowd and forward-thinking programming.

Airali [Mix]

This month we are proud to share a potent hour long mix by San Francisco based DJ and AI music researcher Airali.

A stroll down a dark hallway that twists and turns, containing doors with unknown contents…

From Airali – “I had the idea of a nightmare unfolding as a guide”.

While this isn’t a traditional a dance mix, it contains the same hypnotic signatures as Airali’s club sets. Undulating rhythmic through-lines coax us through a hazy cinematic atmosphere that never lets us get too comfortable. It’s not all dark however – the occasional sprinkling of analog instrumentation and ethereal vocals amid machine-chaos and dense percussion conjures flora blooming in a concrete landscape.

Previous based in the UK, Airali has played in London-based clubs, including FOLD, Corsica Studios, Venue MOT, and The Glove That Fits, to name a few. In 2022, she completed a mini tour of Japan where she DJ’d at venues Circus, Spread and Forestlimit. More recently, Airali relocated to and debuted in California, where she has played in Oakland and San Francisco.

In 2013 the rise of services like DistroKid led to a proliferation of independent music on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

Distributors like DistroKid allow the artists themselves to assume the role of a music label. Traditionally, one of the responsibilities of the label was to create and design an album cover. Designed covers can feel stale, old, and try-hard.

In a genre that constantly reinvents itself, what do artists do left to their own devices in 2024? They simply use photos of themselves, effectively rejecting the entire premise of an album cover. And that’s harder than anything a label could come up with.

Finding Cartola [Post]

When you discover an icon hidden on the walls…

A recent evening out with friends landed us at a listening bar in Alphabet City. As we arrived, the atmosphere was mellow and the space was calm, a live DJ spun an assortment of records in the corner. I wasn’t familiar with the music but something about the rhythmic tempo and light percussive accents stood out to me. The bar, called Studio 151 ↗, had the DJ booth tucked in the corner in front of vinyl filled shelves.

The back of the bar had various large figures on the wall, which I didn’t think much about. I snapped a few shots and posted an image of one. A friend would point out who was in the image, which lead me to discover the life and music of Angenor de Oliveira or Cartola.

In 1963, eager to bring the favelas’ samba to a broader audience, Cartola — with Zica and Eugênio Agostine — opened the famous Zicartola bar and restaurant in downtown Rio de Janeiro; it became the most important samba establishment of that time, providing a link between the traditional sambistas and the incipient Bossa Nova movement.

Shopping at my favorite neighborhood vintage store last week, I was stoked to find an 80’s era airbrush instruction manual by Badger. Initially drawn to the layout and art direction in the manual, but as I looked through it I fell in love with the soft, ethereal quality of airbrush imagery.

Warped: Design 4 Electronica [Post]

Cover art deep cuts from beloved electronic music label Warp Records.

We’ve been inspired by the diverse catalog of electronic music coming from IDM and Ambient powerhouse Warp Records (publishing artists from the likes of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre, and LFO). But almost just as cunning are the iconic visuals that pair with them – like the sinister grin on the cover of Richard D. James Album, the blue-washed faceless figures on Music Has The Right to Children, the flesh-like landscape of Autechre’s Amber.

As an exercise in compiling references for ourselves we enjoyed digging through the early Warp catalog to uncover some of their deepest and earliest cuts. Here are some of the most interesting covers we found. :)

A study in how the absurd can dominate a music art subculture, the Houston design firm Pen & Pixel produced thousands of covers for southern rap projects at the turn of the century. Though their style has recently seen a resurgence (you can now find P&P bootlegs of your favorite pop stars at your local Urban Outfitters), it can never be truly replicated.
